A FERRY DELIVERY of water to Inis Meáin is due later today as two of the three Aran Islands suffer drinking water shortages due to depleted reserves.

Irish Water said that they and Galway County Council are organising a water supply delivery to Inis Meáin to replenish the water reserves.

The first delivery, of around 120 cubic metres of water (120,000 litres), is planned for later today, at least two runs a day will continue “as necessary” until the shortage has been alleviated.

Meanwhile, water restrictions have been introduced for Inis Oírr and will remain in place “until further notice”. There are sufficient resources in the island’s reservoir at this time, according to Irish Water and Galway County Council, but plans are underway to replenish reserves at the water source on the island “over the coming weeks”.

Irish Water says that there are no issues with the water supply on Inis Mór.
